Summer is almost over and the days are getting shorter but there is still something to look forward to. Late August and September bring us a glut of one of Love Taste’s favourite late summer fruit – BLACKBERRIES! Find out why we love Blackberry smoothies so much.
The British hedgerows are now bursting with these sun ripened jewels – which are delicious eaten fresh but freeze brilliantly too.
Aside from their amazing colour and flavour blackberries are brim-full of health benefits too.
They contain important nutrients including potassium, magnesium and calcium – all brilliant for upping energy levels and reducing stress.
They contain brain boosting manganese – 100 grams of blackberries deliver about a third of your recommended amount. Manganese also helps with wound healing, keeps bones and cartilage strong and healthy and regulates blood glucose levels.
Studies show blackberries also have anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. Some research indicates they could even help ease stomach ulcers and arthritis. Their antibacterial properties means they could help to prevent and ease gum disease – so they’re good for your teeth too!
Of course they are also jam-packed with Vitamin C – just 100 grams gives you a third of your recommended daily dose! Vitamin C is integral to collagen formation in skin, bones, connective tissue, and blood vessels.
At Love Taste, we love them blitzed with raspberries and strawberries in our Vitamin C packed Berry Go Round Smoothie. If we’re feeling extra healthy we’ll have a Black Magic – a delicious, detoxifying blend of activated charcoal, blackberries, blackcurrants, cherries, blueberries and banana.
And of course when the days get cooler in September there is nothing better than a bowl of blackberry and apple crumble and fresh cream to warm you up!
