Similar in taste to yoghurt, Kefir is made by adding a live culture of yeast and bacteria (kefir grains) to cow’s milk, which is then left to ferment at room temperature for 24 hours. The carbon dioxide produced in the fermentation process gives it a slightly fizzy and sour taste, and the consistency is similar to milk, which makes it an ideal drink. Convinced yet?!
Fermented foods are known to be particularly good at promoting gut health, and the specific microorganisms found in kefir are said to support digestive health and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines. Although kefir typically contains more fat than yoghurt, it has more protein and probiotics, as well as less calories!
