Its active ingredient is curcumin and this magic compound gives turmeric its superpowers. Curcumin is an anti-oxidant hence its main claim to fame – as an anti-inflammatory. Curcumin can help reduce inflammation so it can ease arthritis, skin flare-ups such as eczema and inflammatory bowel disease. Studies on people with Rheumatoid Arthritis showed that curcumin helped reduce joint tenderness and swelling better than a prescription anti-inflammatory.
In the Indian healing system Ayurveda turmeric is used for healing wounds and for easing respiratory problems and skin eruptions. This is because it has natural antiseptic properties.
