Broccoli has not always had the easiest PR journey.
For many people, it still carries the emotional baggage of school dinners, overboiled florets, and being told it was “good for you” by someone who had clearly never considered pairing it with mango.
But broccoli has range.
Used properly, especially in a smoothie with the right fruit alongside it, broccoli brings useful nutrients, a mild green flavour, and a much better texture than its childhood reputation suggests. It contains vitamin C, dietary fibre, and naturally occurring plant compounds, which means it deserves a little more respect from the blender.
Here are three reasons broccoli earns its place in a smoothie.
1. It provides vitamin C
Broccoli is a useful source of vitamin C, an essential nutrient that supports normal immune system function and helps protect cells from everyday oxidative stress.
Vitamin C also contributes to normal collagen formation, which supports the normal function of skin, bones, and cartilage. Not bad for a vegetable still recovering from decades of being boiled into submission.
2. It adds fibre and plant variety
Broccoli brings dietary fibre, which helps support healthy digestion and makes smoothies feel more rounded and satisfying.
It also helps add more plant variety to your day. That matters because different fruits and vegetables bring different fibres, pigments, and plant compounds. In smoothie terms, broccoli is a simple way to move beyond the usual fruit-only blend.
A little unexpected? Yes. Useful? Also yes.
3. It contains naturally occurring glucosinolates
Like other cruciferous vegetables from the Brassica family, broccoli contains sulphur-rich plant compounds called glucosinolates.
These compounds are widely studied in nutrition research and are one reason broccoli has earned such a strong reputation among green vegetables. We do not need to pretend it has magical powers. It is simply a useful, nutrient-rich vegetable that works surprisingly well when balanced with creamy or sweet ingredients.
