There are more and more milk alternatives popping up, and sales on our staple dairy product have dramatically dropped over the last 2 years, but why?
A new survey on 10,000 people conducted by Vegan Life Magazine and The Vegan Society shows there are over half a million vegans in Great Britain, an increase of over 350% over the last 10 years. Not only vegans, but consumers trying to cut down on animal produce and dairy are looking for these alternative sources of vitamins and protein.
Almond Milk
Almond milk contains no saturated fat and is low in calories (as long as you choose the unsweetened version!), but it is also low in protein, which is the opposite of what can be said for cow’s milk, which provides essential proteins and calcium.
Coconut Milk
How about the new trendy kids on the block- coconut milk and oat milk. Now I am by no means vegan, but I am partial to a coconut latte- as a treat however as this milk can calorific, but is also a good source of iron and magnesium. Oat milk contains beta-glucans that help lower cholesterol and is surprisingly higher in calcium than cow’s milk. Both of these options are great for people avoiding dairy and unable to eat nuts.

Cows Milk
Before dropping cow’s milk from your diet, just remember- the high calcium content and complete proteins are great for bone density and teeth, the high protein content keeps you fuller for longer, which can aid weight loss and it’s our main source of iodine, vital for thyroid health. Drink organic where you can!
