Why Are Strawberries Good for You? 3 Health Benefits of Britain’s Favourite Berry

Published July 18 2026

Strawberries are the undisputed champion of British summertime, but they are far more than just a sweet treat to pair with cream while watching people smash tennis balls around south London.

These bright red showstoppers bring vitamin C, folate, fibre and colourful plant compounds to the table. They also happen to be one of the easiest fruits to love, which helps. Nobody has ever had to launch a national campaign begging people to enjoy strawberries.

Because they bring natural sweetness, colour and a proper fruity hit, strawberries are brilliant in smoothies. Here are three reasons they deserve a regular spot in your blend.

1. They are rich in heart-loving anthocyanins

The striking red colour of a strawberry comes from anthocyanins, antioxidant compounds from the polyphenol family.

Anthocyanins have been widely studied for their links with healthy blood vessel function and general heart health. In plain English, strawberries are not just sitting there looking pretty. They bring useful plant compounds that help make them a smart everyday fruit.

2. They provide an energy-boosting folate

Strawberries are a useful whole-food source of folate, also known as vitamin B9.

Folate contributes to normal blood formation, supports normal immune function, and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. So while strawberries are not a replacement for sleep, sadly, they do bring nutrients your body uses to keep things ticking over properly.

Under their bright, cheerful exterior, strawberries are getting to work.

3. They support healthy skin and cell protection

Just a handful of strawberries delivers a generous dose of vitamin C. This powerhouse antioxidant plays a fundamental role in protecting your cells from everyday oxidative stress caused by environmental factors like pollution. It also actively supports normal collagen production, which is essential for keeping your skin and bones healthy.

And despite all these health benefits, kids love them!
